Excelsior Springs School District expects a total loss after a fire destroyed a custodial shed located at 1007 S. Marietta St. on Thursday evening.

Excelsior Springs Fire Department Chief Paul Tribble said ESFD responded at 5:43 p.m. on June 30 on report of smoke coming from the storage building. An Animal Control Officer who had passed by the building reported the fire.

“Upon our arrival there was moderate smoke coming from the building,” which Tribble described as a maintenance and janitorial office and storage building.

ESFD was able to gain control of the fire in a half hour while Kearney Fire Department provided extra personnel at the scene. According to Tribble, Lawson Fire Department provided EMS coverage while ESPD maintained traffic control.

At the time of the fire the building was unoccupied and no civilians or firefighters were injured. Tribble said the cause of the fire is believed to have been started by an unattended clothing dryer.

ESSD Deputy Superintendent Jaret Tomlinson said the district has already submitted an insurance claim as of Friday morning and would know more when an adjuster comes to the site next week. At this time, the district believes the shed is a total loss and will need to be rebuilt.
