With almost 58 percent of Tuesday’s vote, incumbent Excelsior Springs City Councilman Brent McElwee defeated two challengers to retain his seat for a new three-year term.

With 100 percent of returns counted, McElwee received 214 votes. Ron Warner, a second-time candidate for the council, was second with 87 votes. The third challenger, Carl Harper, finished with 65 votes.

Four write-in votes were cast.

The city council vote was the only issue on the spring 2016 Excelsior Springs ballot.

McElwee, a developer and builder, is a lifelong Excelsior resident who graduated high school here in 1977. He recently committed himself to serve as the volunteer project manager for the reconstruction/restoration of the historic Superior Well ticket office.

McElwee said his priorities for a new term would include the resolution of several ongoing projects, including the modernization of the city’s water and sanitary sewer systems.

He also advocates continued development/beautification of downtown Excelsior Springs and the resolution of several unoccupied, city-owned buildings at the east end of Broadway Avenue.
