James Lowry, 94, of Excelsior Springs, Mo., passed away Sunday, Dec. 27, 2015, surrounded by family.
James Woodrow Lowry was born Sept. 15, 1921, in Kansas City, Mo., to Ralph and Lucille Lowry. James Lowry grew up in Kansas City, Mo., where he graduated from high school and then went on to attend college in Colorado Springs, Colo.
James Lowry served his country from 1942-1945. During his time in the military, he was part of the Army Corps of Engineers and participated in World War II. James was honorably discharged and received several medals: Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with three Bronze Stars and a World War II Victory Medal.
He married Jane Venable in 1945. Jane went home to the Lord in 1984.
In October 1984, he married Thelma Barton. From this marriage he added one stepdaughter. James and Thelma were active in Trinity Tabernacle Church (now called Bridgeway Church), the Gideon ministry and the Bridgeton Helping ministry, in St. Louis, Mo.
James resided with his daughter, Elizabeth Lowry, in Excelsior Springs, Mo., after the death of Thelma in 2013.
He is survived by his children, Cathie Lanier, Elizabeth Lowry and Ralph Lowry; his stepdaughter, Ruth Ann Koller Harbaugh; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. James was a kind and giving person who will be missed dearly by all who were touched by his life on this earth.
Graveside services were scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 31, at Greenwood Cemetery near Gallatin. Friends were invited to call after 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 30, at McWilliams Funeral Home, Gallatin. No scheduled visitation is planned.
